Mobile Phone Glossary
Analogue / Analog
Signal whose value varies continuously over time. Analogue
signal information differs from digital signals , which
move sharply between fixed values.
Bandwidth
A measure of the maximum amount of data that can be
transferred over a connection at any one time.
Bluetooth
A technology that allows devices (computers, phones,
printers, etc…) to communicate with each other
without the need for wires (Wireless)
Built in Modem or Infrared Port
Allows wireless working in conjunction with PDAs with
out the need for additional accessories.
Broadband
Refers to high-bandwidth internet connections such as
ADSL
Dial-up
Connection to the internet via a modem and phone line.
GPRS
General Packet Radio Service. A mobile phone standard
that provides an "always on" connection with
speeds up to 150Kbit/s.
GSM
Global System for Mobile Communications. The digital
mobile phone system used in the UK and many other countries.
Compared to GRPS the GSM system can connect with speeds
up to 9.6Kbit/s
Kbps
Short for Kilobytes per second, which is a measure of
data transfer speed.
Megabyte (Mbs)
A measure of storage capacity, usually for computer
memory.
MP3
A standard for compressing digital audio. The sound
quality of an MP3 file is close to that of CD audio
but requires only a fraction of the storage space.
Ringtones
You can now choose from thousands of different ring
tones, which changes the ring of your phone when it
is called. Some phone shave up to 40 ring tones built
in to choose from or you can now download them to the
phone via the internet
Resolution
The amount of detail shown in an image, whether on screen
or printed. For a monitor, it is the number of pixels
it can display.
SIM card
This is the small card which is located in the back
of your phone. This holds all the personal information
and is unique to you.
Standby time
This is the total length of time you can talk on your
phone until it needs to be recharged
Text Message
Most Mobile phones can send messages up to 160 characters
to other mobiles. This uses a system called SMS (Short
Message Service)
Vibration Alert
This will let you know that your phone is ringing by
vibrating
Voice activated dialling
Allows you to make calls by saying the name of the person
you wish to call. The phone will automatically dial
the person from your phonebook.
Voicemail
A voicemail service is where your phone records messages,
similar to an answer phone.
WAP
Wireless Application Protocol. A specification for the
transmitting data, particularly to mobile phones and
handheld compueters. It allows access to information
services and specially formatted websites (WAP enabled).
3G
3G are the third generation of mobile phone technology.
First came the Analogue phones, then the current range
of phones using GSM, and now the third wave of phones.
3G phones are more like multimedia stations with colour
screens, ability to record and playback video and audio,
as well as the ability to web conference calls.
